Mineral Division, Manavalakurichi unit (MK) is located at a distance of 25 kms North of Kanyakumari (Cape Comorin). All weather major seaports ‘Toothukudi’ is located at a distance of 100 kms and the nearest Airport at Thiruvananthapuram is located at a distance of 65 kms from the MK plant site. Nagercoil is the district headquarters located at a distance of 18 kms from the plant and is the closest major Railway station. The entire coastal stretch of Kanyakumari District is blessed with rich heavy mineral deposits. Annual production capacity of MK mineral separation plant is 91200 MT Ilmenite and about 18000 MT of other associated minerals such as Rutile, Zircon and Garnet.

IREL Chavara is located 80 kms north of the state capital of Kerala,Thiruvananthapuram and 150 km south from the port city of Kochi. The nearest town to Chavara is Kollam erstwhile known as Quilon hence the minerals produced at IREL Chavara unit are popularly known ‘Q’ grade or Quilon grade.
The mining operations are carried out on alternate blocks on a coastal belt of 23 kms between Neendakara and Kayamkulam. The heavies deposit i.e Ilmenite, Rutile, Zircon and Sillimanite within this belt is very rich and is one of the best mineral deposits in the world.
The present annual installed capacity at Chavara unit engaged in dry as well as wet (dredging/ upgradation) mining and mineral separation stands at 2,00,000 MT of Ilmenite and about 40000 MT of other associated minerals such as Rutile, Zircon, Sillimanite, and Leucoxene.In addition unit has the capacity of producing 6500 MT of zirflor.
